How to respond to positive reviews

Updated 7 September 2026 · 2 min read

Replying to good reviews feels less urgent than replying to bad ones, so most businesses skip it. That is a missed opportunity. Responses are public, they show you are paying attention, and businesses that reply to reviews tend to rank better in local search.

Why bother replying to a 5-star review

  • It signals to Google and to readers that the listing is active and cared for.
  • It is a second chance to mention what you do and where, in natural language.
  • It makes the reviewer more likely to come back and to recommend you.

Keep it genuine and specific

The trap with positive replies is that they all start to sound the same: "Thanks so much for the kind words!" fifty times in a row. Readers scroll past that. Mention something from their actual review.

Examples

Thanks Aroha. Glad the bathroom reno came together the way you wanted, and thanks for being easy to work with on the timing.

Appreciate this, Ben. Same-day callouts are the whole point for us, so good to hear it made a difference.

Thank you Mere. We will pass this on to Jason, who did the install. Enjoy the new heat pump this winter.

A light touch on keywords

It is fine for your reply to naturally include what you do and your area, because that is genuinely relevant context. It is not fine to stuff it.

Natural: "Glad we could sort the hot water cylinder for you in Lower Hutt."

Stuffed: "Thanks for choosing us for hot water cylinder repair, hot water cylinder replacement and plumbing in Lower Hutt, Wellington and the Hutt Valley."

The second one reads like spam and Google treats it that way.

What to avoid

  • Do not paste the identical reply on every review.
  • Do not use the reply to run a promotion or push a discount code.
  • Do not reply weeks late in a batch. Aim for within a few days.
  • Do not ask them to also review you somewhere else in the reply. If you want reviews on another platform, that is a separate, earlier conversation.

Make it a habit

Set aside ten minutes once or twice a week to clear your review replies. If you get more reviews than that is comfortable, a tool can draft replies for you to approve and edit, so you are still in control but it takes seconds each.

Common questions

Do replies to positive reviews actually help SEO?+
Google has said that responding to reviews is a positive signal for local ranking. It also keeps the listing looking active, which helps how often it is shown.
Is it okay to use AI to write review replies?+
Yes, as long as a person reviews and edits every reply before it is posted, the reply is accurate, and you are not posting the same text on dozens of reviews.
How quickly should I reply to a good review?+
Within a few days is ideal. Fast enough to feel attentive, and it stops a backlog building up.
