How to remove a fake or unfair Google review
Updated 7 September 2026 · 2 min read
You cannot delete a Google review yourself. You can flag it, and if it breaks Google's rules it gets removed, usually after a review that takes anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks.
What Google will remove
Google removes reviews that break its prohibited and restricted content policies. The ones that matter for businesses:
- Fake engagement. A review from someone who was never a customer, or a coordinated batch of reviews.
- Off-topic. A rant about a political view, or feedback clearly meant for a different business.
- Personal attacks and harassment. Naming and abusing a specific staff member, threats, slurs.
- Conflict of interest. A review from a competitor, a former employee, or the business owner.
- Spam. Advertising, links, repeated posts.
What Google will not remove
- A genuine customer who had a bad experience and said so, even harshly.
- A review you disagree with on the facts. Google is not a court and will not adjudicate "that is not what happened".
- A low rating with no written comment.
If the review is just negative and honest, put your energy into replying well instead.
How to flag a review
- Open your Google Business Profile, or search your business name while signed in as the owner.
- Find the review, click the three dots, and choose Report review.
- Pick the policy it breaks. Be accurate. "I do not like it" is not a category.
- Submit and note the date.
If nothing happens after a week or two:
- Go to the Google Business Profile Help community or use the review management tool at business.google.com to check the status and escalate.
- For clear-cut cases (a competitor, an ex-employee, an obvious defamatory attack) you can request a call-back from Google support from inside your profile.
If it is review extortion
Some "reviews" are a shakedown: a one-star review with a message demanding payment to remove it. Do not pay. Paying marks you as a target and does not guarantee anything.
- Screenshot the review and any messages.
- Do not reply in a way that engages with the demand.
- Report it using Google's dedicated review extortion form, which is separate from the normal report flow.
While you wait
- Post a calm, factual public reply so future readers see your side.
- Keep asking your real customers for reviews. A steady flow of genuine recent reviews dilutes one bad one faster than a removal request resolves.
Prevention
Most "unfair" reviews are actually real customers who felt they had nowhere else to go. If every customer is offered a private way to raise a problem alongside the public review option, a lot of those never get posted in the first place.
