How to get more Google reviews for a gym or fitness studio in NZ
Updated 19 October 2026 · 2 min read
People choosing a gym are nervous. Will I fit in? Is it clean? Will the coaches care? The most persuasive answers come from members, not from your own website.
You have something other businesses do not: a regular relationship
Members see you several times a week. That means you can ask at a moment when they are feeling proud of themselves, and you know when that moment is.
The best moments to ask
- After a milestone. A first month, a personal best, a goal reached, a body composition check. The member is celebrating.
- After a trial or a challenge. Customers who have just finished a six-week challenge often love to talk about it.
- After a class they clearly enjoyed. A coach can say "if you have a minute, a Google review would help us."
- A message to everyone at a natural point. For example, after three months, because by then members know what you offer.
A message you can copy
Hi [first name], congratulations on [your first month / reaching your goal / finishing the challenge]! We are proud of you. If you have enjoyed training with us, a Google review would help other people find a gym where they feel welcome. Here is the link: [your link]. Thank you, [coach name] at [business name]
For members who joined recently, a gentler version works: "We would love to hear how your first few weeks have been."
Where to put your review link
- At the front desk, with a QR code sticker.
- In the changing rooms, where people are looking at their phones.
- In your member emails and your app messages.
You can create a free link and QR code with the review link and QR code generator.
Ask every member
Ask every member at a natural point, not only the ones on your leaderboard. Members who are struggling, or have a complaint about equipment or class times, deserve a way to tell you privately, which helps you keep them. Their public review option remains. See is review gating illegal.
Do not trade free sessions for reviews
A free week or a free PT session in return for a review is an incentive, and Google prohibits it. Celebrate milestones with a genuine message, and ask separately. Read more in can you offer incentives for reviews.
Reply with warmth
Reply by first name, mention something specific about their training and keep it encouraging. Prospective members read your replies as a preview of your coaching.
